Influence of Historic Costume on Cotemporary Fashion Design
Dandy era in fashion
The Dandy fashion on the right is representative of the same which was common in the 19th century. Dandies were more concerned about their mannerisms and physical appearance. As seen in picture on the left, dandy style was characterized by excessive laces, velvet and jewelry. On the right, it is possible to see impeccable tailoring, just line in the historical period. Contemporary designers are inspired by the standards dandy dressing established – standards of quality and attention to all details such as stitching and finishing.
1800’s Inspiration: Victorian’s Bridal Fashion
The Romona Keveza Spring 2014 bridal collection pays homage to the victorian era bridal fashion. The wedding dress on the right was inspired by Queen Victoria’s Bridal fashion popular in the 1800s. The white wedding dress on the left was common in the 1800s. The wedding dress on the right resembles the blush gown common during the Victorian era.
Hat fashion
In the 1900s, hats were common among men. Those in the upper class would spot silk top hat to go with formal wear. Flat caps and newsboy caps were common among the working class. The flat straw boaters and fedoras were most common. Hat fashion has been reinvented in the recent period. The hat on the right is representative of those on the left popular in the 1900s. The hat on the right is wide from the front and has round shape just like those on the left.
Art deco-style shoes
The designer of the shoe on the right is Manolo Blahnik. The Hangisi satin pumps as they are referred to were inspired by the art deco period. During this period, there was a tendency to for using chunky jewelry as well as geometric shapes. In the picture on the right, this was during early 1900s. In both pictures, the shoes have unique geometric shapes which is a distinguishing mark. The shoes leave the ankles exposed on the right side, which the same case even with the contemporary designs.
1950s Trench coats
The 1950s trench coats were beautifully designed and only slightly differs to modern trench coats. Most of the classis trench coats were long, just like the modern trench coats on the right. Some are designed to reach just below the knee while others are designed to fall just slightly below the knee. These were the same designs used in the 1950s, which can be seen in both of the pictures. Trench coats have buttons usually around large cuffs and buttons. In addition, some of the 1950s trench coats also had a belt at the waist lline.
Ladies’ suits
The Ladies’ suit on the right was designed by Donna Karan, and got its inspiration from a Chanel skirt and jacket suit designed in 1938. The distinguishing characteristic of the 1938 Channel suit is the presence of a peplum, popular in the 1930s and the 1940s fashion industry. Donna Karan’s skirt and jacket are designed to fit more closely to the body as compared to the Chanel 1938 skirt and jacket. Donna Karan’s design also lacks some features found in Chanel 1938 design such as tulle, and jacket closures. Both of these designs highlight women femininity. The Donna Karim’s design also helps accentuate women’s figure.
Jewelry Qing Dynasty
Some jewelry designers are drawing their inspiration from ancient antiques dating back to as far as the Qing Dynasty (1644-1911). The image on the right is designed by Zhao Caixia drawing inspiration on an ancient antique which is on the left. The antique on the left combines threads and breastplates interwoven together just like on the picture on the right.
The Victoria and Albert Museum
The pea coat on the right draws its inspiration from the one on the left, by Victoria and Albert Muscum. The Victoria and Albert Muscum pea coat was popular in the early 20th century. In bother designs, there are two parallel buttons funning from the neck downwards. However, in the Burberry design, there are less number of buttons which gives the pea coat a modern look. Another difference is that in the Victoria and Albert Muscum design, the pea coat falls below the knees while in the other design, it is slightly above the knees. The contemporary design was inspired due to its casual look.
1840’s boots
The boots on the right can be found on Teen Vogue Magazine. These boots were mainly used in the 18th century.
