Career in Hospitality Industry

The hospitality industry of any country comprises of a broad group of businesses that offers services to customers. Some of the notable and famous businesses in this industry include lodging, and food and beverage businesses. This industry is entirely focused on the satisfaction of customers and provides particular experiences for them. Research shows that this industry has three basic areas that include accommodation, food, and beverage as well as travel and tourism. Accommodation area is made up of hotels, motel, bed, and, breakfast as well as lodgings. On the other hand, the food and beverage industry includes restaurants, fast food chains and other entities that provide food and beverages (Walker, 2012). Finally, the travel and tourism industry comprises of airlines, trains and cruise ships. This assignment will attempt to identify different careers in the lodging and food and beverage industries.

Question 1:

Describe the various types of management careers that can be offered within each industry (lodging, and food and beverage)

The hospitality industry is a wide field that can offer diverse management careers depending on the level of qualification and the position of an individual employee. Some of the prestigious management careers in the lodging industry include hotel manager, front office manager, sales manager, human resource manager, housekeeping manager as well as guest service manager. However, the size and the type of a lodging highly influences the level of education and experience needed for an individual to qualify as a manager. The Hotel Manager is responsible for how the operations of the hotel can be efficient and more profitable (Walker, 2012). Their responsibilities are maintaining the budget, recruiting, training and supervising staff, handling any guest complaints, and making sure everything complies with the health and safety legislation. The Front Desk Manager is responsible for supervising the front desk clerks. Their main responsibility is making sure that every guest is greeted warmly and the check-in is smooth. They are also responsible for scheduling workers to make sure that someone will be at the front desk to help guests at any time of the day or night. Finally, The Guest Services Manager manages all the client experience. The manager organizes the check-in process so that when the guest arrives, the staff will be waiting for the guest, resolves guest problems and comes up with programs for special services (Hayes, Miller, & Ninemeier, 2014).

On the other hand, the management careers in the Food and Beverage Industry include Restaurant Manager, Kitchen Manager, Chef, and Bar/Club Manager. It is worth noting that the director of food and beverage is the head of the food and beverage industry. Some of the major managerial careers in this industry include kitchen managers, restaurant managers, lead chefs, bar managers, catering supervisors as well as food and beverage directors. The Restaurant manager makes sure that the restaurants are operating efficiently and making a profit while making sure they maintain their reputation and ethos. Restaurant managers are in charge of how the business performs and keeping a high standard of food and service. This position can be very demanding during peak hours, like lunch and dinner. This is a fast paced position. On the other hand, the kitchen manager is in charge of a team of staff and teach them how to cook professionally (Hayes, Miller, & Ninemeier, 2014). This position requires good leadership skills, be fast-paced, and be able to control a budget while the hotel manager is in charge of managing the operations on a daily basis and ensures the optimum performance. Additionally, he or she ensures that improvements are constant in the guest service, employees, sales/marketing, property appearance, and profit/financial control.

Question 2:

Compare and contrast the differences between the General Management (GM) positions within the two industries.

Hotel managers have the responsibility of running and managing hotels, motels and other forms of lodgings. To ensure that their guests get a pleasant experience in their hotels and motels and to ensure that these lodgings are efficiently and effectively run, lodging managers have to inspect guest rooms, public areas and grounds for cleanliness. Additionally, a lodging manager must make sure that a lodging standards for guest service, décor as well as housekeeping are up to standard and meet the desired outcome. On the other hand, food and beverage managers are the leaders in the kitchens and the front of the house in restaurants of all sizes and nature (Chiang & Saw, 2018). Therefore, they have a responsibility of ensuring that the overall operation of a restaurant, see to that they hire qualified and appropriate employees, purchase food and stock, as well as making sure every member of the staff is trained on proper and appropriate food handling.

Question 3:

Analyze and describe the growth in overall employment within these two industries and how this overall growth is forecasted within the next ten years

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics foresees a small increase in this industry in the next five years. Entry level positions will have the most job opportunities. The entry-level positions are servers because this position has the highest turnover. The position that will be in high demand will be the desk clerk because the number of limited service hotels is going to increase dramatically (Chiang & Saw, 2018).

Question 4:

Recommend at least three human resource practices in which each industry can better recruit and retain management talent for their respective industry.

The hospitality industry problems deal with employment-related issues. Recruiters can help the lodging and food and beverage industry figure out the right amount of housekeepers, wait staff, chefs or bartenders that they will need every day. Recruiters can start hiring seasonal workers to help with the shortage of workers (Hayes, Miller, & Ninemeier, 2014). Human resource runs background checks on applicants. This helps prevent deceits, dishonesty and criminal behavior. Human resource can make sure that the new employees understand the details on how to do their job correctly.

The hospitality industry has a high-turnover problem. Human resource can offer incentives to increase retention, such as discounts on items or services, or employee recognition programs. Human resource can help companies set wages and salaries based on pay rates in the area. Employee’s income is from tips. Offering staff shared cash bonuses if they raise productivity has known to be successful in this industry (Walker, 2012).

Conclusion

With the increase in competition in this industry, it is the high time that companies and organizations find a way to outdo their competitors in the market. One of the most viable ways to win over large customers is by providing quality services to ensure that their clients are satisfied and happy. Additionally, organizations, particularly managers of this industry need to ensure they emphasize on efficiency and effectiveness for them to stand out in the market.
