How leadership strategies and trends in labor management have impacted sport and aided in the expansion or deterioration of the sporting industry

Reflection Paper

According to the great Heraclitus, one of the Greek philosophers change is the only constant thing in life. In the recent years, there have been changes not only on how people live but how they operate. Notably, sports have not been left behind considering that there have been changes not only in the rules guiding major sports in the world today but also how they are operated and controlled. For example, technology has substantially changed the face of most sports starting with soccer where goal technology has been applied in the major leagues to detect when opponent scores. Research shows that rules for college and professional sports have been tweaked and adjusted over time to the extent that it is increasingly becoming difficult to keep track of these changes (Cummins, O’Boyle, & Cassidy, 2018).  This assignment will attempt to identify major changes in sports as well as leadership strategies and trends in the labor market that are influencing sports in the world today.

Sports play an important role in the lives of many athletes and ordinary citizens in the country and worldwide. Athletes of all ages are often directed by coaches, giving them substantial impact on their lives and sports life. One of the current trends in sports that has a significant impact on the lives of the players and coaches is transformational leadership. Transformational leadership calls for integration and collaboration between the players and the coaches to identify the need for change, create a vision to guide the change through motivation and inspiration. Notably, this new leadership in the sports sector seeks to execute the change in phases with committed members of the team. Therefore, a transformational coach and team manager always lead by example by showing other members of staff as well as players what is right, ethical and best for the team and what can ruin team spirit (Uymaz, 2016).  Notably, collaboration is key in this form of leadership. Additionally, new leadership trends in college and professional sports strive towards a shared vision beyond winning. Sports are meant to increase collaboration, unity as well as understanding the needs and desires not only of the players, but also for the opponents and the sports fraternity at large.

Trends in the labor market

Just like any other sector in the economy, the sports industry is substantially affected by the trends in the labor market. Some of the notable changes in the labor market that have a significant effect on the sports industry include the wage growth.  According to economic statistics, wage growth has hit 2.7 percent in the past two years, which means that both the wages of the athletes as well as their bonuses and that of their agents have significantly changed.  Additionally, the salary transparency and pay equity strategies in the market (Edwards & Lange, 2013). The push for equal pay means that the salaries of all workers had to be standardized even those of people working in the sports industry.

From the knowledge gained from this course, I can improve my interpersonal and communication skills to ensure that I get well with all stakeholders not only in my team but also in the sports fraternity. Notably, ethics are the key to successful relationships in the sports industry, which means that I must observe high levels of ethics. Notably, it is important to treat other people with respect, be it the coach, team manager, my teammates as well as opposition.
