National Intel Chief James Clapper has resigned. In a House Select Committee held on Wednesday night, Clapper admittedly submitted his resignation letter before the panel for review. Speaking in a CNN interview held shortly afterwards, Clapper said that he “felt pretty good” for the resignation. James Clapper was expected to resign any time since his term as Chief of the National Intelligence was ending. As such, his resignation wasn’t much of a surprise to the majority who knew him. Clapper had in fact hinted of his retirement to close friends and relatives, describing the process as a “countdown” to retirement. His resignation will be officially recognized around January next year. Clapper’s resignation comes at a time when president-elect Donald Trump’s team is seeking individuals who can fill out various positions available in the national security docket.
Clapper’s resignation highlights the need for president-elect Trump’s administration to make quickly the appointments in the national security docket. The major responsibility of National Intelligence Chief James Clapper has been ensuring security of the nation through policy enactment. Speaking during the House Select Committee, Clapper admitted that the U.S. is currently facing enormous challenges – more than any other period in history. Clapper identified some of the major threats facing the U.S. and among them the threat of terrorism. Other major threats he identified include the challenges drawn from various states such as China, Russia, North Korea, Iran, and others, the proliferation of nuclear weapons, and cyber threats. The incoming Chief of National Intelligence will also have to deal with a new wave of local extremism and lone wolves attacks that have been witnessed in the recent past.
