Case Study on Memphis Model
The increasing cases of mental illness cases in the criminal justice system have called for a change services to fit these offenders. The police department at Kelsey has a Crisis Intervention Team, an advanced team of first responders that uses professional and humane tactics to respond to offenders with mental disorders. The program provides training to law enforcement officers on how they can apply the suitable intervention methods to help offenders with mental illnesses (Fulambarker & Watson, 2012).
The primary goal of the program is to ensure that mentally ill offenders receive adequate support and care. Law enforcement officers are offered with training on how to respond when they encounter mentally ill offenders so that they are brought to the justice system in the right manner. When law enforcement officers receive a call about a mentally ill person, it is dispatched to a CIT program officer. The program officer has to go to the scene and ensure that the problem is solved peacefully (Hean, Heaslip, Warr, & Staddon, 2011).
Additionally, the Crisis Intervention Team offers services to local residents who suffer from mental disorders. They residents are made aware that in case of emergencies they can reach officers in the team and if they need to talk, they can always go to a certified CIT program officer. Program officers have a responsibility to ensure that the welfare of mentally ill individuals is well taken care of. Mentally ill individuals are more likely to commit crime since they are not in their right state of mind. These individuals cannot pass through the normal prosecution and conviction that the justice system offers. They need special treatment to ensure that their chances of offending again are reduced. In addition, the team is placed at the city of Kelsey so that citizens can receive counseling services whenever they need. In doing so, mentally ill individuals receive fair treatment from the criminal justice system.
