Biggest Challenges Facing Organizations in the Next 20 Years

Speaker notes

The world is experiencing great changes. These changes extend from technological changes, climatic changes, increase in competition, digital disruption, to population changes. The current changes are anticipated to escalate in the future. These changes are likely to present unique challenges to organizations  in the future. Organizations are anticipated to experience various challenges in the next 20 years. This presentation gives an overview of possible challenges that organizations are likely to experience in the next 20 years

Change of Technology

Change of technology is one of the main challenges experienced by modern organizations. This is anticipated to advance in the future. In the next 20 years, it is anticipated that there will be emergence of new and more advanced technologies to be used in organizations. This will result to replacement of most human labor force by artificial intelligence devices among other technologies. Organizations will be required to keep up with the changing technologies or be pushed out of the market.  Thus organizations’ survival will be highly determine by organization’s ability to integrate the best technology based on its operations. The cost of keeping up with change of technology may be too expensive for small and medium sized businesses and hence limiting their survival in the future.

Some of the technologies that exist today and likely to impact organizations’ future include drone. Drones are likely to replace delivery people. Driverless cars are anticipated to eliminate drivers in organizations and in transportation businesses, robots are likely to eliminate humans in customer services and in other business operations such as packing, and production among others

Climatic Changes and other Environmental Issues

Climatic changes is another aspect likely to influence organizations in the future. The world is already experiencing serious climatic changes. This has resulted to development of various laws and regulation that control production and other business processes. The situation is anticipated to attract more strict business operation rules and laws to minimize emission as the situation gets worse in the future. Climatic change effect is also likely to cause more natural calamities, increasing business risks and limiting business expansion to some high danger prone regions

General climatic change effects are anticipated to increase cost of doing business in the next 20 years

Further Increase in the Level of competition

Businesses are currently experiencing a high level of competition especially due to globalization. The rate of competition is anticipated to increase in the next 20 years especially with change of technologies. Organization will be experiencing rapid market changes than it is happening today. Most products will turn to be obsolete within a very short time period, sometimes even before there the first batch of sales is completely sold out. Customers needs will change more drastically than they are today. Organizations will need to be more innovative to be able to build viable products and to ensure they remain in the market. Organization will need to invest in research and product development, which will increase organizations’ operation cost

Increase in Digital Disruptions

Another possible challenge to be experienced by organizations in future is increase in digital disruption. The cases of digital disruptions have already been experienced in a number of instances including uber technology replacing normal taxi, and digital communication replacing letters and landlines forms of communication. The situation is likely to increase in the future. More new business models and digital technologies will happen and reduce value of goods or services that are  valuable today. A number of organizations will lose their business in new digital disruptions .This means there will be closure of businesses in some organizations, as new organizations  governed by new technologies take over and new business models take over.

The wave digital disruption has already created great effect in transportation, communication, logistics, commerce, construction, healthcare, and gas an oil industries in the last 25 years. This wave is anticipated to increase in the future as people becomes more innovative and as nee technologies continues to emerge on daily basis. Organizations should thus be ready to change with technology or be swept off by digital disruption wave.

Change in Human Resources Management Strategies

The rapid change of technology and integration of modern technologies in organizations such as artificial intelligence devices is likely to replace workers in an organization in various sectors especially in customer services. Organization will then strive to employ more workers with technology based knowledge. This is likely to increase scramble for workers in particular fields such as Information Technology, engineering, and computer science among others. Those experts will turn to be highly expensive for some organizations to maintain, especially the small and medium size businesses. This will impact the performance of those organization and their ability to survive the competition

Increase in Aging population and decrease in working population

Another challenge to organization is increase in the aging population and a decrease in the working population. The health improvements experienced today increases human lifespan. This results to increase in the aging population that need to be supported by the government. This will increase in the percentage of government revenue dedicated to social welfare of elderly people. The aspects human labor force replacement by technology will also reduce number of working individuals.  This will result to decline in the revenue generated from personal taxation of workers. Thus the cost of supporting high number of elderly people in the population is likely to be transferred to the organizations through increase in taxations. Consequently, the cost of doing business is likely to be much higher in the next 20 years

The aging population is increasing with time. Their number is anticipated to grow as time goes as illustrated in the aging population graphic. Interestingly, the number of working population as shown in the china population analysis is reducing with time. This means the number of dependents is growing than the number of earners in the population. The government is thus unlikely to manage to support the senior population through personal income tax, and may consider transferring this cost to organizations.

Summary

In summary, organizations in the next 20 years are likely to experience various challenges

These challenges include the change of technology resulting to high investment in new technologies. Climatic changes is another challenge which is likely to results to more laws and regulations on means of production. Increase in competition is another challenge which is likely to result to death of organizations that are unable to keep up.
